What We Publish

The Three is a nonprofit news publication focused on Bangladeshi politics and economics. We publish in-depth analysis, investigative reporting, and explanatory journalism for the Bangladeshi diaspora and international audiences interested in South Asian affairs.

We do not publish breaking news, opinion columns, or press releases.

How to Pitch

Send pitches to with the subject line: PITCH: [Your Story Title]

Your pitch should be 200–400 words in the body of the email (no attachments for initial pitches) and include:

  1. The Hook — What is the story and why does it matter now? Lead with your most compelling finding or angle.
  2. Your Access — What sources have you already spoken with or secured? What documents, data, or evidence do you have?
  3. The Gap — If this topic has been covered, what's new or different about your approach?
  4. Your Qualifications — Why are you the right person to tell this story? Include 2–3 links to relevant clips.
  5. Logistics — Proposed word count and timeline for delivery.

We respond to every pitch, even if it's a no. Silence is not rejection—if you haven't heard from us, please follow up.

After Assignment

Once your pitch is accepted, you'll receive an assignment letter confirming:

  • Story scope and angle
  • Word count and deadline
  • Payment amount and terms
  • Rights and usage
  • Kill fee (25% if we cancel through no fault of yours)

We include one round of revisions in the base fee. Substantial changes to scope after assignment may warrant additional compensation.

Editorial Process

Draft Submission

Submit your draft as a Google Doc with commenting enabled, or as a Word document.

Substantive Edit

Your editor will provide structural and content feedback.

Line Edit

We'll refine language, style, and clarity.

Fact-Check

You'll be asked to provide source documentation for all factual claims, including contact information for quoted sources.

Final Review

You'll see the edited piece before publication and can flag any concerns.

We follow AP Style with our own house adaptations. A style guide will be provided upon assignment.

Rights and Attribution

We typically request First Publication Rights with a 90-day exclusive period. After exclusivity ends:

  • You retain copyright to your work
  • You may republish elsewhere with attribution to The Three as original publisher
  • We retain the right to keep the piece in our archives

Ethics and Standards

Contributors are expected to adhere to the SPJ Code of Ethics. Specifically:

  • Disclose any conflicts of interest related to your story
  • Do not accept payment or gifts from sources
  • Protect confidential sources
  • Verify information before submission
  • Distinguish clearly between fact and analysis

If you're uncertain about an ethical question, ask your editor before proceeding.
